Welcome to Pack 85!

Scouting is Fun with a Purpose!, and the purpose is to raise youth of strong character who respect themselves and others.  There is no better youth leadership nor community service training than Scouting.  Cub Scout Pack 85 in Beavercreek, OH is dedicated to a lively Cub Scout experience with activities that capture the interest of boys yet are fun for the entire family.

Who We Are

Pack 85 was founded in 1963 and is chartered by St. Luke Catholic Churchin the Tecumseh Council's Chillicothe District.  Pack 85 is open to all 1st through 5th grade boys AND GIRLS regardless of school attended or preferred place of worship.   Our cubs mostly attend St. Luke School, but many attend other schools in the area.   St. Luke Church sponsors our pack and provides facilities for us to meet.

How We're Organized.  Our pack has about 40 scouts organized by dens.  Each den usually has 6 to 8 scouts of the same grade level.   Dens are a great way to make and stay in touch with friends.   Scouts may join at any grade, whether or not they've been scouts before.

  • Kindergartners are in Lion dens
  • 1st graders are in Tiger dens
  • 2nd graders are in Wolf dens
  • 3rd graders are in Bear dens
  • 4th and 5th graders are in Webelos dens

Our leadership is mostly mothers and fathers, but any caring adult is welcome.  All leaders are volunteers who are twice background checked, and twice trained (Catholic Church Virtus and BSA Youth Protection Trainings are required).  We strive to provide our youth the high quality experiences they deserve.

Our affiliations - St. Luke Catholic Church of Beavercreek, Ohio charters us.   We're just outside of Dayton, OH near Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB).  Pack 85 is in theChillicothe District of the nationally top-ratedTecumseh CouncilBoy Scouts of America.

Religious - Scouting is spiritual but does not mandate a religion.  The National Catholic Committee on Scouting provides two religious emblems programs for Cub Scouts; over 90% of our scouts earn both of these awards outside of Den and Pack meetings.

What Pack 85 is Not

We are Not Exclusive - We welcome boys and girls from families of all backgrounds.  Most events are open to siblings, just ask the leader.

We are Not Day Care - You should attend the meetings and events with your scout.   Cub Scouting is generally not a drop-your-son-off activity.   Our activities are parent / son oriented.   Parents provide our pack and den leadership, and everyone is expected to do their part to help run pack and den activities.  Advancement requires adults assist their scouts.  Parents Help the Pack Go.

Achievements and Awards

One of Scouting's biggest benefits is the structured exposure to skills and practical knowledge needed in family, career and community.  With the current program, scouts accomplish 6 required "adventures" and at least one of many elective "adventures" to reach the next rank.  The requirements are age appropriate and belt loops are awarded for each completed adventure.  Adventures range from outdoor activities such as sports and fishing, to visiting zoos, fire departments, police departments, and historical places, to learning crafts and religion.

Lions and Tigers, the youngest Scouts, participate in all scouting events with an Adult Partner (usually Mom or Dad).

As Scouts grow, they can learn essential skills and enjoyment of outdoor activities, community involvement, personal safety, sports, and the environment.   They earn emblems of recognition as they progress throughout the Cub Scout achievements and electives for their age group.

Webelos are the oldest Scouts and they earn pins signifying their proficiency in Physical, Mental, Community, Technology, and Outdoor activities.   The Webelos program also prepares boys to join Boy Scouts at the end of fifth grade.

Meetings

During the school year, dens meet between two and three times a month and also have several field trips per year.  Specific times are determined by each Den Leader based upon Scout availability; times may change throughout the year.   Parents usually take turns organizing the den meetings and field trips.   Pack meetings are one evening a month (usually the third Monday from 7-8 pm in the St Luke cafeteria) and feature award recognition and fun activities.

Camp Adventures

Pack 85 Cub Scouts have many opportunities to enjoy camping and the great outdoors.   Each summer, Cub Scout Day Camp, Wolf/Bear Camp, and Webelos Resident Camp atCamp Birchprovide packed days of fun-filled games, crafts, shows, and activities.  Spook-o-ree in the fall and Family Bash in the spring provide overnight camping experiences with tents atCamp Birch.   In addition, the pack plans spring and fall camp outs typically done at St Luke.

Pack 85 Activities

Pinewood Derby - Cubs build and decorate 7" pinewood cars and race them down a 25-foot ramp, a classic event that's fun for all.  Open classes for parents & siblings too.  We hold workshops to help all build great cars.  Speed isn't everything; we've many style and performance awards.

Service Projects - Cubs collect canned goods for the Greene County Food Bank as part of the annual Scouting for Food Drive. Pack 85 has adopted Phillips Park (and pond) near Beavercreek.  We help place US flags on veterans graves every Memorial Day at the Dayton National Cemetary.  Cubs take turns throughout the year keeping our adopted areas cleared of litter and helping with small Beavercreek and St Luke community projects.  Dens help at various parish events, including making sandwiches for the homeless.

Blue and Gold Banquet - A feast, a cake decorating contest, awards, door prizes, special speakers, skits, and fun activities blend with our annual potluck meal in the wonderfully decorated cafeteria.  Each year a new theme challenges Dens to craft the best centerpiece, give the greatest holler, and show the greatest spirit.

Scout Sunday - A special noon Mass for all former and current Cub, Boy, and Venture Scouts at St Luke in early February.

Team Challenges - Many events and Pack Meetings through the year push the dens to work as teams to solve mental and physical challenges.

Previous Special Pack Events - Victoria Theater show, Overnight at Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, Council Ski Day, Sleep Out! @ St Lukes, Wright State Climbing Wall, Tom's Corn Maze, College Basketball game, Dayton Dragons Game and overnight on Fifth Third Field, GPS Orienteering Easter Egg Hunt, Snow Tubing, seasonal hikes, and more!

Costs

Dues for 2020-21 are $125/scout.   This fee covers ONLY the costs of scouting: national BSA dues ($66), a Boy’s Life magazine subscription ($12), all achievements & awards (~$8), Handbook ($17), neckerchief($10), slide($6), and one set of uniform insignia ($11). A uniform belt ($10), and shirt ($25) must be obtained separately.   Optional camps and special event fees vary from $5 - $145 per camp/event.  All profits from our one fundraiser (popcorn sales in the Fall), as well as much-appreciated donations from families, parishoners, etc,  cover remaining unit costs and provide for a richer Scouting experience for the Pack.

New for 2021:  BSA has implemented a new $25 one time joining fee for new members.

Each Den covers its own meeting and activity costs, typically in an ad hoc manner with parents donating time, talents, money, and resources as needed.

Financial issues will never prevent a boy from fully enjoying Pack 85.  Scholarships are regularly provided to help offset costs for those in need; please see the Cubmaster or Committee Chair.

Youth Protection

The Boys Scouts of America,  Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and Pack 85 strive to create a fun, safe environment.  To join Pack 85, all leaders and parents will take both BSA's online and the Diocese's live youth protection classes.  Additionally, all leaders are fingerprinted and background checked, twice.  Parents complete the last leg of the safety tripod, talking to their scouts.  Pack 85 recommends parents read BSA's Cub Scout Youth Protection website and watch the It Happened to Me video with their son.
